Food and Gifts on the Days of Their Festivals

Question: Is it permissible for a Muslim to eat the food that is distributed by the Kuffaar or the People of the Book (Jews and Christians) on the days of their festivals? Also, is it permissible to accept gifts that may be distributed during their festivals?

Answer: It is not permissible for a Muslim to eat from what has been made by the Jews and Christians or the Mushriks on the days of their festivals. It is not permissible for a Muslim to accept gifts distributed by them. This is because if one does this, then they will be cooperating and honouring symbols and their false beliefs, and this cooperating is a sign that one is happy for them during these days.

It could also lead to the Muslims incorporating their festivals with our festivals (days of ‘Eid). Or at the very least, it could lead to the Muslims taking their days of celebration as well as ours as a day when we can exchange food and gifts between us and them.

All of this is Fitnah (discord) and an innovation into the religion.

It is affirmed that the Messenger of Allaah [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] said, “Whoever innovates into our religion then it will be rejected.” [Narrated by al-Bukhaaree (2550) and Muslim (1718)]

Likewise, it is not permissible to give gifts to them in celebration of their festivals (i.e. gifts that which are specific to their festivals).

And Allaah is the Source of all Strength. May the Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and his companions.

قال شيخ الإسلام رحمه الله في كتابه " إقتضاء الصراط المستقيم مخالفة أصحاب الجحيم " :

(( وأما قبول الهدية منهم يوم عيدهم: فقد قدمنا عن علي رضي الله عنه: أنه أتي بهدية النيروز فقبلها. وروى ابن أبي شيبة في المصنف: حدثنا جرير، عن قابوس عن أبيه: "أن امرأة سألت عائشة، قالت: إن لنا أظآرا من المجوس، وإنه يكون لهم العيد فيهدون لنا. قالت: أما ما ذبح لذلك اليوم فلا تأكلوا، ولكن كلوا من أشجارهم". وقال: حدثنا وكيع، عن الحسن بن حكيم عن أمه، عن أبي برزة: أنه كان له سكان مجوس، فكانوا يهدون له في النيروز والمهرجان، فكان يقول لأهله: ما كان من فاكهة فكلوه، وما كان من غير ذلك فردوه. فهذا كله يدل على أنه لا تأثير للعيد في المنع من قبول هديتهم، بل حكمها في العيد وغيره سواء، لأنه ليس في ذلك إعانة لهم على شعائر كفرهم. لكن قبول هدية الكفار من أهل الحرب وأهل الذمة مسألة مستقلة بنفسها فيها خلاف وتفصيل ليس هذا موضعه. وإنما يجوز أن يؤكل من طعام أهل الكتاب في عيدهم، بابتياع أو هدية، أو غير ذلك مما لم يذبحوه للعيد. فأما ذبائح المجوس فالحكم فيها معلوم، فإنها حرام عند العامة.))

قال الشيخ ابن عثيمين كما في شرحه للكتاب في الشريط رقم " 18 " دقيقة (1:13:31)

((هذا غريب من الشيخ رحمه الله ! ، لأن قبول هديتهم في أعيادهم تشعر بأنه رضا بأعيادهم ، لكن فيها آثار عن الصحابة رضي الله عنهم ، ولعل الصحابة إنما يقبلونها في ذلك الوقت لقوة الإسلام وأن الناس لن ينخدعوا بذلك وأن الكفار أيضا يعلمون أن المسلمين أعلى منهم ، لكن في وقتنا الحاضر لو قبلت الهدية منهم في وقت أعيادهم .... وقالوا أن المسلمين وافقونا أن هذا اليوم يوم عيد ، فلهذا ينبغي أن يفصل في هذه المسألة ويقال : إذا خيف أن يترافع الكفار وأن يستعلوا وأن يظنوا أن هذا رضا منا بأعيادهم فإنه لا يقبل الهدية سواء كانت مما يشترط فيه الزكاة أو لا . نعم .)) اهـ

وسئل الشيخ الألباني رحمه الله عن طعام الكفار في أعيادهم فقال :
( لا يجوز تأييد الكفار على عاداتهم الدينية، مهما كانت أشكالها و صورها ، طعاماً ، لباساً ، تأييداً ، كل هذا لا ينبغي ولا يجوز. { طعام الذين أوتوا الكتاب } يعني الأكل المعتاد ) ا.هـ
